Who is being interviewed?George Dodge What is his/her title or position?Mason and Carpenter What is his/her race? Gender? Age?White, Male, 70 Where is the interview taking place?Peru, Massachusetts. What is the date of the interview?1/34/39 Who is the interviewer?Rosalie Smith
George Dodge was born in Worthingford, Massachueets. He calls himself a Yankee because his father was one of the first people to settle in old Deerfield and his mother's people went there in 1700 and many of them settled in Chesterfield. When his wife Martha died he planned on never having another women take her place. He had been though harder times. He states that "In 1876 there were the hardest times I ever saw." which was during the Great Depression. If people could get work they would only get about 50 cents a day. His mother provided the income from her home dairy where she sold butter for 12 cents a pound, sugar for six or seven cents a pound, and turkey for 12 and 14 cents a pound. It lasted like that for about 8 years.
Based on what I read about George Dodge, his story made me very thankful for what I have. I could not imagine working extreemly hard and getting very little in return. I admire him because he knows what is is to be in the worst position. His wife died and he choose not to remarry because he did not want anyone to replace her. This left him with more work but he was able to handle it because he went though the great depression. -Becky P
